FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How old do I have to be before I can learn to drive and book my first lesson?

A: You can book your lesson before your 17th birthday and as long as you have your provisional licence , you can have your 1st lesson on your birthday.
Apply for your provisional

Q: Do I have to pass my Theory Test before taking my first lesson?

A: No, but you do need to pass your theory test before you take your practical driving test.
Visit the theory test page

Q: What do I need to bring with me on
my first lesson?

A: You will need your provisional licence, glasses (or contact lenses) if you wear them, and your payment for the lesson (or block of lessons) if you have not already made a payment.

Q: What happens if I need to
cancel a lesson?

A: You normally need to give 48 hrs notice, to avoid having to be charged, (dependant on circumstances) as it may be difficult to fill that slot. In the case of emergency or illness and if it is not a regular occurrence, then you may not be charged.
Check with your A Roads Driving Instructor if you are unsure.

Q: How do I book my first lesson?

A: You’ll find all my contact information in the Contact' section please don’t hesitate to give me a call.
Visit the contact us page

Q: How much will it cost to
pass my test?

A: This depends on the individual. As a guide The Driving Standards Agency says that, on average, you will need approx 2 hours of professional tuition for every year of your age, i.e. the average 20 year old will need 40 hours. You’ll also need to pay your theory and practical test fees. A sensible budget to work on is approximately £900 - £1000.

Q: Can I be picked up and dropped off in different places?

A: Yes, if required it can usually be arranged that the drop off point is a different location than pick-up. Ideal for pick-up from work, drop off at home or pick-up from home drop off in town, etc. This must be within the working area and will be dependent on the location of the next lesson, so must be arranged beforehand.

Q: How do I book my test?

A: You have to book both your theory and practical tests with the Driving Standards Agency, which is the government department responsible for carrying out all driving tests in England, Scotland and Wales. This can be done by phone, letter, or most easily online – for more information on this visit the links page.

Q: I have already passed my driving Test, do you think Further Training is a good idea?

A: Pass Plus  by A Roads Driving School  can help you to take the next step after passing your test, it helps you deal with Motorways and extends your driving experience. It can also mean you qualify for a discount on your car insurance.
